Allen Ramsey didn't start writing songs to make a record. He didn't play in bars and honky-tonks trying to get a record deal. The self-titled debut CD from Allen Ramsey proves that, for Allen, it's all about making and playing music.....good music. His songwriting and gravelly vocal combined with superb production create an outstanding collection of music that show Allen for exactly what he is. Those who have seen him live will no doubt agree. This new release, from Wooden Pickle Records, includes all original material written or co-written by Ramsey. The CD begins with "Be That Way Again" a torch song where Ramsey laments "maybe this is just a phase....God I hope it's just a phase" about a declining relationship. The Traveling Wilbury-style "Happy" intertwines sarcasm with a straight-ahead groove and rocking guitars. Ramsey's lyrics take you to places we've all been, and he belts it out in a way that lets you know he's singing about things we've all experienced. The CD is tastefully filled with undertones of steel guitar, mandolin, and dobro that reflect Ramsey's roots and musical influences. The collection of songs includes several beer drinking, bar sing-alongs such as "Tear In My Eye" and "Drunk Again", but the he shows his story-telling skills in "No Other Way (Farm Song)" about a farmer forced into smuggling marijuana to save his farm. The CD was produced by noted Nashville producer/songwriter Byron Hill. Hill has produced artists such as Gary Allen, Kathy Matthea, and Gil Grand as well as numerous indie acts. In addition to production, he is also included as a co-writer on "Talk To Me" and lends his talents on background vocals.
