Despite its organic and textured sound, Stillman is the creative outlet of just one man - Chaz Craik. He is something of a rarity; an instrumentalist who is equally at home twiddling knobs in the studio as he is twisting vocal shapes on the stage. Yes, he can produce - you only have to listen for a couple of seconds to figure that one out - but first and foremost Chaz is a songwriter. Everything you hear on this CD is his own work with the exception of the drums (laid down by a friend from rising alt-country popsters Lucky Jim). Conjured together with a couple of guitars, a creaking PC and the patience of a saint (or of an obsessive ohmigod-the-walls-are-closing-in perfectionist, take your pick) this is the sound of an artist whose technical flair is matched by songwriting ability. It's not always cheerful - perhaps the inevitable by-product of a nocturnal muse - but there's a musical warmth and lyrical sensitivity which underpins everything you'll hear. The sound speaks for itself. It has a maturity and a confidence rarely found in an act that isn't already several albums down the line. Here is what those in the know have been saying about him - 'Very, very few singer-songwriter albums that get released induce so many shivers. It's as if Elliot Smith and Tom McRae got together to make the music they can't quite do on their own. Think that's hyperbole? Track down a copy and prove us wrong.' - Channel 4 Teletext (Planet Sound's demo of the week) 'strong with imagination, inspiration and texture' - Heathen Angel (Demo of the week) 'to walk from this unaffected is to not love music at all...without doubt one of the finds of the year' - Losing Today 'sublime and truly beautiful' - Glasswerk 'you will want to sink miles into this music' - Joyzine 'sounds ebb and flow with glorious abandon' - UK Music Search 'a layered, spine-tingling work of art' - Record Overplayed Check out the artist's website: http://www.stillman.org.uk Track List: 1.
