"It has been an unfortunate side-effect of the modern age that alongside with the creation of marvels like the Internet, we have allowed ourselves to expect a certain amount of technological interference in the music we enjoy. Luckily we have musicians like Steve to help remind us how rewarding a simple melody and honest words can be. Sometimes optimistic, sometimes defeated, Somebody Else offers you a window into the world of backyard jams that we singer/songwriters call home. So this new fangled era isn’t all bad, right? At least it gave you the opportunity to find this website and Steves music. Now be quiet and enjoy."-Stephen Covell

17 year-old Steve Boller has certainly taken on a great undertaking at a tender age. His debut album, “Somebody Else”, is at a caliber beyond his years. Filled with well-crafted song structures, ear-catching choruses, and verses filled with meaning and aesthetic pleasure for the eardrums, “Somebody Else” is certainly worth every penny. Recorded in Boller’s home with no outside help except for mastering, the 10-song disc has been compared in style to that of popular artists such as Jack Johnson, John Mayer, and Jason Mraz. The CD takes the listener through a whirlwind journey of real, honest emotion, thought, and question.

From the irresistible opening riff of “Give Me a Sign” to the haunting ending of “Good Night”, Steve’s first effort leaves the listener hanging on a thread, ready to make the journey once again.

"Most seventeen year old musicians are trying to find that special garage that provides the best feel for the music they are playing. Thoughts about being a business savvy musician are something that is at times missed by the younger generation. While youth has traditionally been able to produce decent music throughout the years, finding a young musician that cares first about the quality of the music that he/she is producing and secondly about how to generate an ever growing fan base is something that is at times lost.

However, a young musician hailing from New Palestine, Indiana has launched himself into a truly inspiring musical career at only the age of seventeen. Steve Boller has gone out and grabbed the music industry that to many musicians remains aloof and distant and demanded that his music be respected, listened to, and purchased.

A solo artist, Boller has produced a phenomenal debut album entitled Somebody Else . This album is Boller's two-fold attempt to create an album that is musically impressive but also to gain an entrepreneurial edge in the industry by also marketing and selling his own albums. Having first sold his album in a local coffee shop in his hometown, Boller has now launched his website where the albums may also be purchased.

The album starts off with Give Me A Sign , which with some smooth and soft acoustic guitar sounds walk you into the album nicely. The soft yet paced voice of Boller meets the guitar nicely and then transitions to more instrumental sounds. With an emphasis placed just as much on the music that Boller is intent on producing, the listener quickly acknowledges that the album is sure to be musically and vocally strong.

Unsatisfied begins with a slower and methodical beat that almost features a dark vibe to it. Boller picks up the pace of the guitar a bit and the vocals become almost more emphatic and emotional. "I fall asleep every night unsatisfied...I need something to survive. I'm going to find myself always unsatisfied unless I put myself to good use now," sings Boller. Boller's artistic emphasis on writing good lyrics that vocally work for him and the feel of the music that he is trying to portray is impressive, even considering the young age Boller is at.

Phantom is perhaps the most interesting track on the album. This track features a wide range of musical sounds, sometimes almost dissonant sounds, however, the range is unique and seems to almost fit together nicely. Often times you might associate trying to incorporate too many different sounds into one track as being musically risky, however, Boller has created a track that ranges from slower beats to wailing vocals. The recurring theme, "You're not there, you're just a phantom" plays a couple times throughout the song tying together the track. A distant and wispy vocal piece of the track shows once again that Boller has some musical range and is not afraid to try different sounds.

Good Night winds down the album nicely. A very slow and direct sound turns off the lights on the album and closes the door for the evening. The song has a feel reminiscent of that one last song that the band might play as the lights are slowly turning back on at the end of a set to close out the night. The song is perhaps one of the best tracks on the album and gives credence to the notion of saving the best for last. Boller's guitar playing is summarized on this track as being of high caliber and his vocals are perhaps best exhibited on this track in the sense that Boller musically gives his all on this final track. The perfect union of Boller's guitar playing to his vocals is highlighted on this track, and Boller surely leaves fans wanting to already get their hands on his next album by closing out this album with this track.

Steve Boller has probably defied a lot of skepticism that has perhaps been thrown his way. One can imagine that some might have thought that there was no way that a seventeen year old high school student could ever produce, record, and market a debut album. However, Somebody Else serves as a testament to Boller’s musical genius and is a steady barometer that shows Boller should musically have great things coming his way in years to come.
