Overwater's second release, Disclaimer, has a bit of everything: loud, fun, rock, introspective folk, probing lyrics, soaring harmonies, and even an original irish folk piece with acoustic guitar and Irish low whistle. Overwater is based in southern California and they have played in many places throughout the past couple years, from Hollywood clubs such as the Whisky A Go Go and The Gig, to coffee houses, churches, and college/seminary campuses. Their sound draws from the unique musical backgrounds that each member brings, including folk, rock, alternative (whatever that means), jazz, blues, world music, gospel, and God help us, high school marching band. The result is a sound that eludes simple classification, blending acoustic elegance with occasional crunchy distortion. The L.A. Times described their sound as "acoustic-leaning, earnest and complex pop rock." (Living Up To Their Legends, by Richard Cromelin, Feb 20, 2003.) The band Overwater was originally called Pilgrims's Road and was formed as a fun study break while attending graduate school at Fuller Theological Seminary. As members graduated and left and others took their place the name was changed to Overwater to reflect the bands new sound and growing passion to create and perform. Lead singer and songwriter Chris Koch brings most of the random instruments into the mix. Besides singing and playing acoustic guitar he enjoys playing penny whistles and Irish low whistles, harmonica, djembe, doumbeks, and other percussion, concertina, mountain dulcimer, and he is currently learning to play the bagpipes! Chris's draws inspiration from many places including artists such as Dave Wilcox, Bill Malonee, Eddie Vedder, Ani Difranco, and authors/theologians such as Fydor Doestoevsky, Karl Barth, Fredrick Buechner, and Henri Nouwen. Doug Haub brings the funk (or the folk) as the versatile acoustic guitarist and harmony vocalist. Doug recieved his undergraduate degree in music composition and is a seasoned musician and composer. Overwater is rounded out by Darren Baughman on the rocking drums and percussion, kilt wearin' Erik Graham on bass and Wil on awesome electric guitar. "For us as a band, we create and perform music because it's something we can't avoid doing. No matter what we do or where we go the words, melodies, chords, and music keeps following us around and vying for our attention.... so we create and play. Our music comes out of our own personal and corporate struggles, pain, joys, fears, questions, hopes, and reflects the tension of living somewhere between the 'now' and 'not yet' in this hard and sometimes beautiful world. Through our music we want to be honest about our struggles and also honest about the hope that carries us through the darkness." -Chris Koch Check out the artist's website: http://artists.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/overwater/ Track List: 1.
