For over 20 years, the musicians who made up One Week In April have played together, in varying configurations, always saying that one day they would record together. Finally, in April 1996, Nick Bennett and Kent Rytting assembled the group in a house in Syracuse, Utah (and later, Fast Forward Recording in Salt Lake City), and, using rough demo recordings made over the years as a starting point, began rehearsals. The band played through dozens of songs from the writers in the group - rehearsing, arranging, winnowing down, and recording, until 14 songs remained. The diverse musical backgrounds of the songwriters are evident immediately upon listening to Songs Arriving Late. Equally present are the influences of the other band members on each song; not just in the obvious ways - the vocal and instrumental tracks that each one contributed - but also in the arrangements, which are very much the results of the group collaboration; and the production itself, which was a close partnership between Nick Bennett, Kent Rytting, Tony Korologos, Mitch Barron, and the songwriters.
