Trying to describe or explain the kind of music that Marc Olsen plays is like trying to hold on to fistfuls of sand. As soon as you think you have a firm grasp, it slips through your fingers.

It's hardly an exaggeration to say that Olsen is one of the most unique voices to emerge from the Seattle music scene over the past decade. A uniquely gifted guitar player who replaced longtime Patti Smith collaborator Ivan Kral in Sky Cries Mary at the precocious age of 21, he went on to bend the shape of the Seattle sound in influential Northwest trio Sage before striking out on his own. Since then, he's released two solo albums and toured both on his own and as a guitarist for Mark Lanegan.

Now he's back with his third and most accomplished album, Brighter When. A hauntingly gorgeous collection of 11 songs produced and recorded by Olsen and his brother and remixed by Tucker Martine, it's destined to once again send critics scrambling for appropriate descriptions.

PRAISE FOR MARC OLSEN'S PREVIOUS SOLO ALBUMS

"Beautifully, emotionally twisted narcotic blues." "Ghostly, dark and private."
The Rocket

"Call it roots music, call it Americana, call it what you want. This is the emergence of a major voice." The Iconoclast

"Majestic, affecting, and most of all intimate, didn't ever...hasn't since... showcases a gifted guitarist turned expressionist singer-songwriter," No Depression

"Seattle's Marc Olsen has a voice to match his music: hushed, chilling, spacey - a cross between Neil Young on his rustic albums and Elliott Smith." CMJ New Music Monthly

"didn't ever...hasn't since..." is that rarest of songwriter discs: it is self-referential without stooping to self-pity, it strides at low volume without plodding at low energy, and it is undeniably American without becoming irreparably cornpone." Lollipop

"It's moving and real, and it can't help but draw you in." Magnet
