Singer-songwriter King Bee grew up in Eastern Europe, in the country that gave the world Franz Liszt, Bela Bartok, Drakula, Rubik's Cube and the world famous Goulash soup: Hungary. He was fascinated with musical sounds from a very early age as he occasionally got the chance to sit at a neighbor's piano. He gently touched the keys and listened with almost religious awe until all the sounds vanished. He got a harmonica for his 10th birthday, which he played constantly. After his brother abandoned his cheap Russian guitar, King Bee started to practice seriously and took lessons as well. The family lived next to an all female dormitory where King Bee gave serenades at night under the girl's balconies, not always in vain. The women were crazy about the blond teenage boy who played his tunes with relentless enthusiasm. In high school, all students had to wear a blue uniform and walk around rigorously in circles during recess time, says King Bee. “I stood out because I used to play an imaginary drum set; I wildly imitated kick, snare, cymbal and distorted wah-wah guitar sounds with my mouth while walking. They were all convinced that I was crazy, I frequently got disciplined.†After his high school years, Bee won 1st place in the Hungarian National Songwriters Competition and toured the country as a solo artist playing folk tunes and his own compositions on his guitar. His winning song was recorded by the Hungarian National Radio. Later he played music for a Commedia Del Arte theater group, dressed as a clown with a big red nose. He carried a huge kick and snare drum on his belly while rolling out a marching rhythm. The actors played trumpets, cymbals and screamed through tin megaphones to draw attention. Soon amazed peasants ran out of their homes and were invited to attend the upcoming performances at the market plaza of the village. King Bee studied classical guitar at the Bela Bartok Conservatory in Budapest and went on to earn his masters degree at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, where he majored in choir directing and harmony. During his college years he taught classical guitar, played in pop groups, washed windows and sang in professional choirs to support himself. Eventually King Bee escaped to the USA with $200 in his pocket, a backpack and a guitar. His first job was that of a janitor in a Saint Louis, MO hospital. Bee barely spoke any English, but he soon noticed that some of his colleagues spoke in a dialect similar to the sound of blues records! This, and other American influences can be heard in his songs along with the impact of Hungarian folk tunes and classical music as well. King Bee soon moved to Los Angeles, where he taught music theory and held a million of other jobs as well (none of them too long). He also wrote instrumental music for radio stations to support himself while working on his own material. King Bee is currently pursuing a career as a recording artist. He is a unique performer, sometimes sad and serious, other times hilariously funny or vulnerable, definitely something different. His debut CD “Tie-Dye Girl†is available on the Internet and other distribution channels. If you are lucky, you can catch him performing live in the New England area.
