Abby Ahmad, a self-trained singer, songwriter, and guitarist since the age of 10, has worked as a professional musician since the age of 15. With the heart of a folk musician, the soul of a poet, the voice of a blues singer, and an intricately percussive guitar style, her music is a meshing of the material and the metaphorical. Ahmad’s songs address issues of love, loss, elation, betrayal, division, and recovery. Ahmad thrives on the interaction between audience and performer. She rarely speaks of the impetus behind the songs, but instead concentrates on forming an inimitable relationship with her audiences. “Live performance, for me, is a time when I am allowed to share with others what I do expressly for myself,” Ahmad says. I want them to feel comfortable. I hope that they are affected not only by the music itself, but also how it is conveyed. The translation is key.”
