First and foremost, the self-titled ep from The Electromagnetic is a collection of addictive pop songs. Alternating between late sixties garage rock and glistening power pop, the ep's sparse production allows the twin boy/girl vocal of James Ambrose and Mara Keagle to dominate the mix. The songwriting is understated, well crafted, and sincere; the sugar sweet harmonies, throwback guitar work, overdriven Farfisa, and lock tight rhythm section perfectly complement lyrics on hope, love, and tragic friendships. The album's opening track, 'Stargazer' begins with a promising burst of guitar followed by vocal harmonies that set the tone for the balance of the release. '21st Century' boasts more complimentary harmonies, continuing the mood set by the opener. 'Love You Into Pieces' lightens the feel as swirling keyboards, open-stringed rhythm guitar, a memorable bass line and a sharp breakbeat lay the foundation for the lyrics. 'Charlie' walks a tightrope as forlorn pop coexists with a pre-punk Velvet Underground vocal. Wrapping the ep is the rock ballad, 'Sixxteen' a polished, yet not glossed-over study in the art of the pop hook. With their debut, The Electromagnetic have crafted a short but intriguing blend of modern production, classic song structures and lush vocal harmonies, and laid the foundation for their first full-length release.
