ASA began early in 1998, made up of John Wachunas (Lead Vocals, Guitar) and high school friend, Zach Papaleoni (Backing Vocals, Drums). In September, John's brother, Joe, was introduced as the bassist. They played throughout the summer of 1999 and began to build a Syracuse fan base. In April of 1999, ASA went in to the studio and completed their first album, Charlie Free. 300 copies were made and they were sold in a matter of weeks. After graduation, Joe spent 10 months in Italy returning in June of 2000 to attend LeMoyne College and continue serious work with the band. Since his return, the band has had 500 more copies of Charlie Free pressed. ASA has played an increasing number of concerts throughout Central New York. They have graced the stages of Armory High (formerly Styleen's), Syracuse University, LeMoyne College, Planet 505, Borders Books and Music in Carousel Mall, and the OPL. On March 24, 2001, ASA had the opportunity to play one of Syracuse's largest venues, the Landmark Theater. Mark Bialczak of the Post Standard compared ASA's music to "U2's vintage sound," and John Grover of The LeMoyne Dolphin says that, "ASA rocks!" The band is always looking to expand their musical fan base and get their name out to the people of Syracuse. ASA's original songs are not only talented, but also incredibly powerful. Their goal is simply to bring meaning back to rock and roll in an age of apathy and commercialism. ASA is a band with tremendous potential that is always looking to expand their fan base and musical abilities through performing at new venues.
