THE GYPSY SONS are known around the states for having the best fans. Their own unique blend of rock music with lyrics like, "Man, I'd wrestle a gator and strangle a snake, just to take you home with me" and "I've been caught up for way too long, I need to feel the air of my country home," live with you long after the band has left the stage. Currently, you can catch them on tour in America in support of their self titled debut EP.
JODY PETTY - Related to NASCAR hero Richard Petty, this singer from North Carolina has his own sex appeal and charisma. His dream of fronting his own band materialized when he met The Hammer at Selma Studios. Using their free time to share a few beers and an acoustic guitar, their friendship grew, the songs flowed and The Gypsy Sons hit the ground running.
THE HAMMER - Has had numerous successes with his different bands. He's been signed to major labels and has shared the stage with multi-platinum selling acts. This Virginia boy taps deep into his southern roots playing soulful guitar riffs that lay the groundwork for the foot stomping rockers and the sugary sweet ballads.
TOM VAUGHAN - What can you say about this prodigy that hasn't already been said and where on earth would you start. Tom is a VA native and boyhood friend of both The Hammer and Cecil. He is an extraordinary musician. He brings a magical low end chemical groove with his bass playing that propels the undercurrent of The Gypsy Sons. Did we mention that he's a wizard on the piano, banjo, dobro, keys, drums, cropdusters, fiddle and so many more instruments and gadgets that the rest of the guys told me to stop mentioning it...
CECIL FREEMAN - Is a hard hitting drummer with a back beat style that holds down the fort. His influences are John Bonham and Charlie Watts just to name a few. Cecil has played in several bands in Los Angeles and Northern Virgina for many years. He's toured all over the United States as well as Australia. Born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia, he lived in Los Angeles for several years before returning back to Virginia. I guess he had to leave home to find his roots!

CD REVIEWS:

by KENNY HART from MUSIC NEWS NASHVILLE 2/18/06
Style: Southern Rock/Country Soul
Quote: "A hot-chicks-on-the-make, drinks-lined-up-on-the-bar, hell-raisin' rocker..."
Forgive me if I borrow from this band's own description, but this CD is, without a doubt, "good stuff from the all-american bad boys of southern rock and country soul". I couldn't say it any better than that, unless I tell you that it feels like Led Zeppelin meets Merle Haggard.
Hell, the way they start out the album with "Long Gone"--sort of like Jimi Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner," only in this case borrowing from "Amazing Grace"--you wonder if these guys are reincarnated 60's rockers; they could very well be Lynyrd Skynrd's band coming back for another round, for that matter. I'd buy this record in a heartbeat, if I could. But this self-produced (apparently) work doesn't seem to be available anywhere. They need to remedy that!
If you're ready to party, The Gypsy Sons are right there with you. This is hard-driving southern rock that is perfect for a beer-drinking-let's-get-drunk-and-rowdy Saturday night. Or Friday. Or any other night of the week. "Motorway" says it all: "...it's hard to keep a bad man down."
This is a hot-chicks-on-the-make, drinks-lined-up-on-the-bar, hell-raisin' rocker--what this band is all about. But they have a sensitive side, too, albeit on only one track. "Mississippi" is an introspective, longing-for-home, slow dance tune that is about as close as these boys are ever going to get to a ballad. I can almost hear them saying: "Ballads? Ya gotta be kiddin'! Rock on!"
I couldn't agree more!

ERIC GENE MANN from MUSICIAN’S OF MAYBERRY says:
Everyone I played The Gypsy Sons’ music for has got a kick out of it. I asked each person how they would classify the sound. One guy said, "That's Gruntry." I asked him to repeat that two more times before I finally got it ...Grungy Country!! I got 3, "That's Southern Rock, man" and 1 "It's a Country Band with a Rock Guitar Player."
Somebody else said, "It's Country, it's Rock, but it's not a crock!"
What happens when a southern boy from the heart of North Carolina who can sing his ass off meets up with two country boys from the hills of Virgina who happen to be the tightest rhythm section in the business and a kid from Alexandria who can grunge and spit licks off the axe with the best of them?
You get The Gypsy Sons.
And when The Gypsy Sons parked their MySpace Artist band profile page in a zip code between Springfield, Virginia and Greensboro, North Carolina, do you know what happened?
That Southern Rock band showed up on the regional charts of MySpace Artists and will now be rated monthly on the MOM charts. They also got invited to join the Musicians of Mayberry's online network.
Please welcome The Gypsy Sons. They are ready to work with other member bands and to sign up for local shows and music festivals. They will be performing at Green's Supper Club in Greensboro February 23rd. They will also be appearing at The Coffee Bean in Dobson. Check out their music and if you'd like to see them at the Bean, leave The Gypsy Sons a message and let them know.

Play the songs on the site and you'll hear all you need to know. The Hammer tears up the guitar while Jody sings with a dixie heart and soul, Cecil on drums works with Tommy Lee Ray Vaughan on bass to keep the band's rhythm grounded with a country rock flavor. And, I tell you what, if you don't think any band could perform a head-banging country song, go ahead and give "Roll On Dixie" a whirl. Enjoy.
Congratulations to The Gypsy Sons for being voted The Musician’s of Mayberry Artist of the Week beginning February 12th, 2006.

LOCAL LOVE REVIEW, VIRGINIA:
I don't much care what people think, and I said if I thought a band was good, they'd get a review. I also said, that I listen to pretty much anything. I didn't lie, and to prove it...I present, The Gypsy Sons. The last few years, I've noticed a shocking decline in the quality of country music coming out, to the point that I pretty much quit listening unless it was old stuff. Now, I can start again. These guys brought back the sound, and did it well. It's not that pop-country crap that all the different radio stations play because they can't decide what genre it belongs in. The singer's voice is awesome, and the guitar work is impressive enough that, whether you're into the band's sound or not, you have to give some props. It's gritty and melodic. You can tell that there's some feeling put into the songs, which is a big plus to me. You can't sing about experience that you don't have. Don't try. These guys have it. Check them out @ http://www.myspace.com/thegypsysons. They have a show at Jaxx (in Springfield, VA) with Thomas and King on April 7th at 10pm. Sorry, but that's all the info I have on it. Check their site for more.
