Life After Liftoff is Portland, OR based quartet that plays an original, energetic brand of groovin' funk n' rock music. With accessible pop melodies, funky, percussive guitar, dramatic lead and harmony vocals, and soul-dripping saxophone the group has quickly cultivated an engaging, emotionally driven style that is taking the northwest scene by storm. Their self-titled debut EP, LIFE AFTER LIFTOFF, bounces effortlessly from funk to pop to rock. While the songs explore topics of love, relationships, and growing up, they yield an emotional quality and groove that is accentuated by the band's tightly woven arrangements. The EP leads off with, "Wine and Food," a toast to the longevity of friendship and a dance favorite that underscores the rich baritone vocals of Michael Herrman. "Spin Out of This" follows, illustrating the on going interplay between Trevor Rasmussen's (Big Time Rosie) tasty tenor sax licks and Herrman's vocals. Injecting the driving groove of drummer Adam Gershon (Big Time Rosie, The Spaces) and Rasmussen's fiery lead vocals, LAL quickly picks up the tempo with the politically-charged rocker "The Game." They then take an acoustic turn with "Distant Fate." Featuring the solid and complex vocal harmony work of Herrman and Rasmussen, the tune displays the kind of diversity one would find at any of LAL's live shows. A soul searching, funk-flavored anthem, "Liftoff," not only gives the band space to loosen up (there are solos from all four members), but also provides closure and the band's namesake. The last line of the song reads "Time spent looking east of the sun, my Life After Liftoff has just begun. It's just begun." After only seven months of collaboration, LAL has a winning EP and a steadily growing regional fan base. With this and a west coast tour planned for Winter 2002, Life After Liftoff has indeed just begun.
