All Genres > Pop > with Live-band Production > JASON MCKINNIS: Taken

Jason's debut album is firmly set in the pop/rock genre, and still maintains a strong worship through line from beginning to end. Two tracks on the album are covers; SonicFlood's 'Lord Over All', and a riveting version Hillsong's 'I Give You My Heart'. The remaining eight songs are original, written by Jason, and run the gamut of the genre from the big sounds of 'Hero For All Time' and 'Higher', to the more intimate moments of 'Your Creation Speaks' and 'Taken', the title track. Jason cites Delirious as an influence, although the production on his album is certainly unique to that band's highly stylized sound. Other influences are Coldplay, Sting, and circa 70's Pink Floyd. Jason says "as we were working through the production process, we had to divorce ourselves a bit from the music and artists that have influenced me. We really wanted to make an album that represented my sound." The end result is an album of material that is tangible, inspiring, and emotionally moving.

The album was produced by Seattle producer Caleb Couch for Freshmade Media, and was sung, played, tracked, engineered, arranged, mixed and mastered in it's entirety by Jason and Caleb, a remarkable feat, given the quality of the end product.

Jason believes that worship music should inspire the believer to know God, while simultaneously drawing the unbeliever to God. "It happens when we openly seek intimacy and depth with the Father, and do so in an environment that the world can understand. Worship is not foreign to the world- we were created to worship, we do it naturally, almost instinctively. But because of the Fall, mankind has lost that connection to the Father that Adam had. As His Church, He's given it back to us, and as we openly display our relationship with God in the common language of music, the world will respond. I wouldn't call it 'worship evangelism'. That phrase seems to conotates a watering-down of the depth of worship in an effort to reach the lost. That's not what I'm talking about; I'm saying that it is deep, intimate and powerful worship, set to modern music, that will reach and impact the lost."

If you are looking for a great album of modern worship, then 'Taken' is well worth getting ahold of.
