Indie Rocker, Sonia V. is fired up to release her much anticipated first full length CD, "a thing or 2", 2/14/05, already receiving thumbs up from radio, media, and fans. Making it's debut on international radio charts everywhere, the title track "a thing or 2" is taking it's place alongside of some of the heaviest hitters in rock music, as "a thing or 2" has made it's way to #1 on the National Modern Rock/Alternative Radio Charts and individual radio stations in the Rock, Alternative and College genres. With an unmistakable female rock voice, Sonia V. takes modern rock into a more cutting edge territory by emulating music that captivates pop culture and MTV viewers to reach a modern day audience. She's often been described as "a Jesus chick with attitude" - after you hear those powerhouse vocals and funky vibrato quiver, you'll find it hard to compare her to any other female artist in the industry. With modern rock chart bound tunes and musical influences reminiscent of Jet, Blink 182, Hoobastank, Switchfoot and a little Rolling Stones thrown in for good measure, Sonia's vocal expressions amid the modern rock array run close to Gwen Staffani of No Doubt, Alanis Morisette, and Avril Lavigne. Every song on the new CD is a winner with the one of a kind trade-mark. After hearing this 5 foot dynamo with a big voice, one can't deny, she's definitely not your ordinary girl.
Sonia has "a thing or 2" to say with this cutting edge release and states "Despite all the raised eyebrows I've seen throughout my life, I have learned to just be the me God created me to be, and that I'm alright that way. I have to do the kind of music God made me to do in order to reach the people He can't reach through those who would rather play it safe - I've always been leaping off the edge with everything I do in life! I have never been mistaken for "normal" and once you catch a glimpse of who I am, you'll never forget me. It's that unique design that I've realized God wants to use to get His message through to those that most Christian music overlooks; wild hair, crazy quirks, and rock-lovin' weirdo that I am. This music will especially relate to girls like me who are plagued with social pressures to be someone they're not. The world tells you that to be worth anything, you have to be a supermodel or strive for superstardom, and music these days that relates to young people sells that perception. Instead, God has a better plan - to be the unique person He crafted you to be and know that He loves you that way. We see too many people craving to be loved and wanting to be in the spotlight, so much so that they will do anything to get there. It's time to bring music back to where it should be - to say something significant and not sell a product or an image full of emptiness. This new CD "a thing or 2", is gonna rock like I wanna rock, and I have a lot to say about all that and just shoot straight."
Sonia's "a thing or 2" CD released February 14th, 2005 covers rock territory not usually heard by female artists and includes all original modern rock tunes penned by Sonia and a few music friends including producer Chris Shandrow (The Frantics, Goodbye Audio, Miss Angie, Stereo Deluxx), independent artist friend Teresa Garcia and Jerome Fontamillas of Switchfoot.
Sonia states, "With this project, I didn't want to have to follow any expectations from the music industry or radio trends with my style or content, but just write from my heart and in the way God was leading me to do it. I think being different will make me stand out above the rest of the usual industry diet, and so far, it's working - people are responding, and mostly an unsaved audience for which the vision of this project was birthed. I decided to just do what I do and it's meant for those who have ears to hear it - those ears seem to be the ones who are looking for something more. I wanted this music to be heard anywhere and not confined to a Christian audience in terms that only they would understand. I want anyone from any background to be able to get into it and understand what I'm saying without having to use a Christianese dictionary. That's where God has called me. I've been through a lot of negative things in my life, but when I write songs, I turn it into a positive spin and hope that it will empower others to do the same with their own life situations. My audience is a younger generation, who for the most part don't know anything about growing up in church and have a negative view of Christianity because of the poor example the Church has given them. I'm hoping these songs will help them rediscover what real genuine love is all about from the One who authors it."
Of recent acclaim, Sonia received recognition by the "Song of the Year Contest" for her exceptional songwriting ability for the song "a thing or 2", the title track off her forthcoming release. Song of the Year is an international songwriting contest supporting VH-1's Save the Music Foundation. Sonia competed against songwriters from all over the world for this honor. The Song of the Year judges are some of the biggest names in music including many Grammy Award winners. Sonia received the honor of being named one of the top suggested artists to listen to by the Song of the Year songwriting contest. Sonia was also recently nominated for "Female Rock/Alternative Vocalist of the Year" by the CMC Music Awards along with well known Christian artists Plumb, Charity Von and Sarah Kelly and will be performing at the American Christian Music Awards in September 2005.
Songwriting honors seem to encompass Sonia. In February 2002, Sonia's song "You Are My Life" was awarded by the Gospel Music Association as "CCM Song of 2002" at the Nashville Regional AGMA Conference which was hosted by Margaret Becker and made it's way onto several compilation projects including "The Truth Comes Out" CD, an official resource of Exodus International and Focus on the Family Organization, and an independent Christian film "I Do Exist" by producers of "The Truth Comes Out" project. "You Are My Life" became a CCM hit where it graced radio charts top spots as well as hit #1 on Mp3.com's Christian Pop Charts, finishing the year out as the highest ranking song on the Pop charts in the Christian Pop or Rock genres in just one month after being pre-released and really exploded in Europe taking the number 14 slot for the entire year end chart on UCB Europe Radio. Because of overwhelming response, Sonia independently released an EP project titled "Passion Of My Soul" in May 2002 and all 5 songs received charting status and professional recognition including international success as the #1 artist in Peru for 12 consecutive weeks. Two of the songs on the "Passion of My Soul" project have since then been recorded by signed Christian music recording artists.
