Fusion: The merging of diverse elements into a unified whole.

According to singer-songwriter Lindsey Yung, the idea of "fusion" expresses the outcome of any genuine creative undertaking. As the title of her new album, Fusion draws our attention to this fact and suggests that what we will hear is the work of many unique elements coming together to form a musical whole.

Lindsey actually began singing before speaking. Certainly, the cultivation of her vocal gifts has always been the core dimension of her person and shaping force in her life. Lindsey first appeared on the San Diego music scene as an acoustic artist and soon became known for her sultry ballads and melancholic melodies. However, she walked away from her local success as a "coffee-house" performer to explore forms of music she felt had a different dimension and energy. Thus began her collaboration with the production team known as Brainfire Technology- Chad Tuthill and Edgar Alminar. Out of this mutual endeavor, a dance album was produced- "The Return"- which brought forth a polished electronic sound in a new genre. It's success led to Lindsey's performing at larger and more popular venues: The Viper Room, The Sunset Room, Cane's Bar and Grill, etc. Yet, in spite of good reviews and increasing recognition, Lindsey remained unsatisfied with the dance music genre. Sensing that neither the somber acoustic, nor the beat driven dance music expressed Lindsey musically or spiritually, she began writing again with Brainfire Technology and drummer David Butterfield, and finally found what can truly be called her own sound and style.

"Fusion" is the merging of the acoustic and electronic music that Lindsey had earlier explored. This unique sound has even acquired its own descriptive label- "acoustic-electronica". It encompasses powerful ballads: acoustic -guitar driven songs accented with electronic elements from keyboards and korgs. Also featured are groove-based songs with drum rhythm and bass lines at their core. Each member's talent and creativity has contributed something unique to the style and vibe of this album. In essence, the album's sound can be attributed to the fusion of the musicians who wrote it. Lyrically, this album is Lindsey's most powerful. She clearly and insightfully addresses life's basic experiences and brings them forth poetically in song. Thus, it is not surprising to learn that she holds two degrees from San Diego State University in Philosophy and Religious Studies. The presence of her educational foundation is evident throughout her lyrics. A crucial theme that runs through many of her songs is the importance that creativity has in Lindsey's life- what she refers to as her "becoming." When asked about the particular track "Becoming", she replied, "It is through creativity that I come to know myself, discover others, and sense life. It's my connection with something ultimate. In creativity, I think, something higher is moving through us when we become empty and open enough to allow the energy to flow through us. The creation that comes from that, whether it's a song or anything else, has our unique mark on it. When genuine creativity takes place, there is a merging, a 'fusion' between the person creating and something greater."

While the lyrics of "Fusion" form the album's depth, it is Lindsey's captivating voice that makes the songs soar. The beauty of her voice is truly remarkable; its range is uncommonly great and its power to move is very definite. A reviewer from SD Music Matters Magazine put it succinctly and accurately when she referred to Lindsey's voice as, "A haunting, symphonic boom." It is not uncommon to hear people proclaim that Yung has one of the most beautiful voices they have ever heard. With "Fusion" Lindsey certainly seems to have found the musical style that fully realizes her vocal potential and the lyrical depth that releases it's most heart-felt expression.
