So what does Equinox sound like? It's a question better answered with the seven songs on our demo, "a long way..." "All That I Could Ever Have" and "Yellow Sun" are rock radio singles on a sugar buzz. "Turn" is a dark, plaintive, keyboard-driven ballad. "Darkest Days" and "Statue" are lush and orchestral. "The Pain of Joy," the band's perennial live opener, is a hard-driving, uptempo salute to the band's classic-rock influences. And the closer, the Latin-tinged "Monte Carlo Jam" is a sampling of vocal and instrumental solos thrown against a musical backdrop originally written as a throwaway sound check.

"a long way..." is our second record. The title acknowledges how far we are from where we think we can go. But it also is a reference to how far we've come since 1998, when drummer John Phillips posted fliers around Champaign, Illinois, looking for some musicians to form a band. Keyboardist Luke Bard entered the picture in 1999, and quickly emerged as the band's primary songwriter. From that original band after several permutations, name changes, parade gigs, battles of the bands, high-school gymnasium performances, open-mic nights and benefit concerts, a group called Equinox emerged.

Band members and styles have come and gone, but not without leaving their influences, their mark, on Equinox's core. These days, you'll hear strains of classical music, funk, rock, Latin and jazz. These distinct styles find their way into all our songs -- sometimes obviously, sometimes subtly, sometimes just in spirit.

The result is a rich, tasty palette of modern-rock influences, leading to the band's new description of itself: We are the Skittles of today's music scene. There's a flavor for everyone.
