TIN HUEY "disinformation" a new CD celebrating our 20th anniversary of not being a band! "REAL" BIO "The Critics Raved..... then we ate sack lunches" The above phrase was coined by Tin Huey saxophonist, Ralph Carney, in describing Tin Huey's impact on '80's New Wave music and the music industry's impact on Tin Huey. The Huey began in Akron, OH, in the mid '70's as part of a select club that no one in their right mind would desire membership in. Friendships and relationships existed (and many still do) between Tin Huey and fellow Buckeyes Devo, Chrissie Hynde and Pere Ubu. The first record releases by the Hueys were the EP, "Tin Huey", the single "Breakfast With the Hueys" on Clone Records, and an appearance on the Stiff "Akron Compilation" as well as Clone's "Bowling Balls From Hell" compilation. During this period, Harvey Gold released a solo single on Clone, John Cale's "Keep a Close Watch" b/w "Armadillo". Discovered at the legendary JB's in Kent, OH by Robert Christgau of the Village Voice while writing a series called "Down in the Boonies", he described Tin Huey as a band that played "...Art Rock for laughs" and that they were "... in search of the eternal mysteries of the whoopee cushion". As a result of Christgau's enthusiastic endorsement, A&R Hall of Famer Karin Berg and music legend Jerry Wexler of Warner Brothers Records came, saw, and signed Tin Huey in 1978, which resulted in the LP "Contents Dislodged During Shipment". The most widely-aired songs from this album were "I'm a Believer" (Tin Huey's tongue-in-cheek power pop version of seminal art rocker/Soft Machine veteran Robert Wyatt's cover of this Monkees classic), and "Hump Day", a Chris Butler-penned vision of industrial working class bliss. Notable events from the recording of this album were Captain Beefheart's visit to the studio, where he was so impressed with Ralph Carney's harp solo on Chris' song "Slide" that he declined The Huey's offer to perform one himself, and suggested the band change the name from "Puppet Wipes" (...'sounds like something Frank would do.") to "Puppet Lights". The boys declined as well. Band personnel at this time: Michael Aylward on guitar and vocals Stuart Austin on drums and percussion Ralph Carney on horns and anything else that moved Chris Butler on guitar, vocals, and often anything else that Ralph missed Mark Price on bass, vocals, and occasional hyper-crack guitar Harvey Gold on guitars, keyboards and vocals After leaving Warner Brothers in the fall of 1979, during the music industry's first ever version of a "depression", Tin Huey regrouped and in 1980 released the single "English Kids" b/w "Sister Rose" on Clone. Moving from Akron to the New York area, Mark and Chris both took sabbaticals. Harvey moved over to bass and Ralph Legnini (a/k/a Ralph-E-Boy) joined as guitarist. This incarnation of the band recorded tracks at Eddie Offord's (of Yes) studio in Woodstock and mixed a few tracks with Gong's Daevid Allen. Rob Sabino (whose credits include Chic and David Bowie) also helped with production duties. Most of the material on "disinformation" dates from this period. Other notable Huey activities: Ralph Carney has played with the B-52's, Tom Waits, participated in Hal Wilner's Allen Ginsburg, William Burroughs and Thelonius Monk tribute albums as well as Wilner's Disney project. Ralph has worked with a number of other cutting edge musicians, is a current member of Orange Symphonette and has released three solo albums - "Ralph Tunes" , "I Like You (A Lot)" and "This is...Ralph Carney". Chris Butler's Waitresses actually pre-date his joining Tin Huey (with a single also for Clone, "The Comb" b/w "Clones"), and were debuted as a live Huey extension at NYC's Bottom Line where the Hueys played with Television. Chris has released several solo projects (including recordings made on antique audio equipment like wax cylinders & 1940's Webcor wire recorders), produced Freedy Johnston and Joan Osborne and has had the Spice Girls (?!?) cover his evergreen hit "Christmas Wrapping". More him-ness at . Stuart Austin lives in Akron, kjsndfkjhouy computers and just bought a new drum stool. Mark Price is a video producer, lives in California, has been playing in public without a license and has not just bought a new drum stool...but is considering it. Ralph Legnini has composed music for television (HBO), plays and writes actively, and as a result of said activity, has recently had a child, which he IS, in fact licensed to do, in Ulster County only. Harvey Gold will be happy to produce and direct your next music video. He was involved (as technical supervisor) in the Academy Award nominated documentary "Adam Clayton Powell" and received a Cable Ace as producer of A&E's "Caroline's Comedy Hour". Chris worked as music director for the series "2 Drink Minimum" that Harvey produced for Comedy Central. Michael Aylward and Harvey Gold have been working in the studio under the nom de plume Mr. Ray Violet. Both Harvey and Michael also participated individually in Chris' composition "The Devil Glitch", a Guinness Book of World Records holder as The Longest Pop Song (69 minutes/1998 U.S. Edition). We are gigging now. Really. All the Hueys continue to be involved in recording projects...rumors have it with each other in the near future...infact, two new discs are in the works We just never learn, do we? -30- *see also... -the Trouser Press web piece on Tin Huey (www.trouserpress.com) -Tin Huey's website (www.tinhuey.com) -The All-Music Guide (www.allmusic.com) -POS Records (www.posrecords.com) -Chris Butler's Future Fossil website (www.nutscape.com/ChrisButler/ffm.htm) -Cleveland Live (www.cleveland.com/ultrafolder/music/cle/3/huey/index.html) -Cleveland Rocks Timeline (www.cleveland.com/ultrafolder/music/timeline/1970/1970apunk.html#tinhuey) Check out the artist's website: http://www.tinhuey.com Track List: 1.
