the zimmermans were one of washington, d.c.'s hottest acts of the early-to-mid-nineties. fronted by the explosive vocals of lisa e., and featuring the songwriting and guitar talents of jonathan spottiswoode, the band released its second CD, LONELIEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD, in 1996. the record careens from aggressive, edgy tracks like "loneliest woman" and "still be mine," to poetic gems like "wonderful life" and "your luminous body," to dark, jazz- and world-music-inflected epics like "blue mosque," "july," and "portuguese woman."

at the time of this recording, the zimmermans were:

lisa e.: vocals & accordion
jonathan spottiswoode: vocals & guitar
candace de bartolo: saxophone
tom watson: trumpet
tim vaill: drums
john young: bass

LONELIEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD was produced by kramer and the zimmermans

the zimmermans broke up in late 1996. several band members went on to form spottiswoode & his enemies. lisa e. moved to san francisco, where she has, among other things, won acclaim (and awards) for her performance in "hedwig and the angry inch."
