Diane’s songwriting career began in coffeehouses in Toronto, where she was living at the time trying to make it as a visual artist and general society rebel. Many of those songs were composed in the small hotel room she rented above the Isabelle Avenue blues nightclub. Her recording techniques at that time were equally as grassroots - using two portable tape recorders, she would first record a song onto one, then bounce harmonies with the second recorder - a “use what you’ve got†approach towards a broader sound. Several years later, armed with her beloved lipstick red electric Stratocaster and a home studio, Diane’s passion for music and art continues. Presently, Diane Barbarash is recording her third CD (previous recordings: “Sacred Touch†in 2001, “Secrets†in 1998), which promises her best material yet. Liquorice Sea, Diane’s last band in Vancouver, BC, quietly disbanded in 2004. Her upcoming CD is an intensely personal solo project, scheduled for release Fall 2006. Diane Barbarash has been a recipient of two Canadian FACTOR awards and has performed at many festivals including North By North East in Toronto and Under The Volcano in Vancouver. Her band Liquorice Sea was featured as a finalist in umbrellamusic.com’s “This is New Musicâ€, and was spotlighted on cdstreet.com. Liquorice Sea and Diane Barbarash can be found at cdbaby.com, on CBC Canada’s newmusiccanada.com, and in publishing catalogues in Vancouver and New York for film and TV.
