Described by one fan as "Rage Against the Machine meets Monty Python," Electric Sheepdog is the band that thinks they're a comedy troupe. Claiming influences as diverse as Frank Zappa, Chick Corea, King Crimson, The Residents, Metallica and Britney Spears, the band is able to mix hard rock, jazz, progressive chops and eclectic humor into a surprisingly palatable stew. Pittsburgh's Rock 'n Roll Reporter says Electric Sheepdog is "like being in a circus with silly clowns one minute and then stumbling into an insane asylum the next." They ignore the lines between musical genres, and between serious music and satire. From Zappa-esque complexity to blues simplicity, and from the humor of a Dennis Miller-like rant to the seriousness of a nightmare, Electric Sheepdog makes musical mayhem fun. Their new CD, Malarkey, isn't just rock with tinges of jazz or country, it changes completely from straight-ahead pop/rock to heavy metal to traditional jazz to old-school country, in less than half-an-hour. "T'Opus" mixes odd time signatures, punk rock and a waltz to tell of an injury to their keyboard player. "Number of the Jell-O Beast" tells the frightening true story behind that slimy fruit dessert, and in a lighter moment "I Wanna Pee on That" tells how, while it may be an insult coming from a human, Sheepdog pee is just a way to show you care! While the band was formed just over a year ago, the individual musicians have been making musical mischief for some time, Bryan the guitarist and Ginger the keyboardist in Pittsburgh's ESP, drummer Giovanni in Italy's Insam Lovers, and bass player extraordinaire Ben teaching Bootsy everything he knows.
