BREAKOUT MODERN ROCKERS THE SPEEDS RELEASE NEW EP Among all the young rock bands trying to break onto the scene these days, it can be tough to separate one band from another. That is, only when you?re talking about the ones that sound the same. The up and coming trio known as The Speeds is certainly an exception to that concept, and they?re out to prove that rock can still be crafted without using the all-too-common alt. rock cookbook that seems to have become popular in recent years. With clear vocals and a driving sense of purpose to their music, you?d never know that this Pittsburgh-based band has never set foot in a label-owned recording studio. After all, who needs a studio when you can produce a sound every bit as good as the real thing from the tile floors of your own bathroom? Now the trio from Pittsburgh has released a four-song self-titled EP recorded and produced in their own homes to spread their talents as they perform throughout the mid-Atlantic. Already a hit in Pittsburgh and with radio stations like WXDX, The Speeds are setting their sights on gaining nationwide recognition, and their new EP is just the way to do it. Combining their upbeat, driving tracks and gratifying harmonies provides a clear sense of what this band is about and their passion for music. The opening track on the EP, Ask Me If I Care, has a driving edge to it, a sound reminiscent of modern rockers The Vines and the rebellious call-and-response style of punk legends The Clash, an obvious influence of the band as evidenced in their focused but defiant sound. Another defining characteristic of The Speeds is their solid melodies, creating a mix between the dirty sound of modern rock and the precise musical execution of the past, something many recent artists lack. The melodies of High on Cash and Nothing at All lend real credibility to these musicians, proving that they can write more than one enjoyable song without simply revamping the structure of a previous hit. In addition, the harmonies on Nothing at All boast volumes about the band?s musicianship in their clarity and choice of chords. Go Away, however, returns to the roots of alternative, with a sound influenced by modern rock pioneers Nirvana, utilizing unique effects to foster a classic rebellious sound while sticking to the originality that sets The Speeds apart from their peers. Though having only formed under the title of The Speeds in the summer of 2002, lead vocalist/guitarist J. Vega, drummer Keith Klein, and bassist/vocalist Jim Pane have been playing together for almost five years in various bands and projects. Finally banding together in their current lineup, The Speeds have recorded dozens of tracks to be released as they continue to build their reputation along the East coast, and the rest of the country soon thereafter. -- (Courtesy of Rainmaker Publicity) "Utterly charming punchy pop. The kinda disc that makes me smile from the first chord. A fresh blast of summer in the middle of an ice storm." -Jon Worley Aiding and Abetting "Energetic and melodic rock with a punk attitude. The performances are tight and the production is solid." -Chris Lupton Impact Press "The Speeds' music consists of young, cool, slightly acidic vocals played against relatively hard electric guitars. However, the stray sounds that float through these four tracks imply that far more could be going on here; perhaps the band will explore these possibilities when they record an entire LP." - Mike Meginnis Splendid E-Zine "We are catching a sneak peak early in what just might become a significant rock and roll career. Even at this very early stage they're making highly addictive sounds. The Speeds play with so much energy and excitement you can't help but get caught up in it." -DJ Johnson Cosmik Debris Magazine "High-powered rock at its most excellent." -Keith "MuzikMan" Hannaleck Music Dish Check out the artist's website: http://www.thespeeds.net Track List: 1.
