Awarded "Best Pop Band 2001" by the readers of the Phoenix New Times, Sugar High's songs have already been featured in various movies even before they put out a CD! Their song "Turbo-Teen" is featured during the opening titles of the 20th Century Fox smash from 1999, "Drive Me Crazy", starring the lovely Melissa Joan Hart. Here's the full story: It all started in the Summer 1994 when Sean and Adrian put an ad in the Phoenix New Times looking for a bass player and lead guitarist who were into the Ramones and Redd Kross. Pat and Rusty (who placed a similar post in the paper weeks earlier looking for 2 more members to complete their group who were into early Beatles) found the classified to be right up their alley and planned on a quick response but proceeded to lose the phone number. Way to go! Both camps continued searching for like minded musicians, jamming with many Arizona players, to no avail. Months later, as fate would have it, Adrian and Sean ran the ad for one last shot and this time it found the Singleton boys in a position to make two copies of the number. All right! After a successful acoustic jam between Pat and Adrian where they traded off on Beatles, Tom Petty, and Cheap Trick numbers, the four decided to make the next natural step together; check out each others album collections. Two months of rehearsal and the guys, now named AUTUMN TEEN SOUND, (Adrian came up with the name on the first day of Autumn) played their first show November 29th '94 at a darling little club on Baseline Road called Hollywood Alley. Here's a quick timeline to bring you up to date with SUGAR HIGH in the 21st Century.... 1994 Personnel: Patrick Singleton - Lead Guitar / vocals Sean Gens - Drum Kit Rusty "Marlboro" Singleton - Bass Adrian Evans - Vocals / Guitar 1995 Gigs and more gigs. Cutting teeth in the clubs. Horrible equipment (Pat used to play guitar through an old set of 4 foot PA columns covered by an American flag, Rusty used an acoustic bass for the first 3 months, and Adrian's guitar had a 6-inch crack through the headstock.) June 2nd: First out of town show in Tucson at Club Congress (opening for the REFRESHMENTS.) September 24-30: First recording session at Peter Walker's Sympathetic Studios, Phoenix AZ. The West wall is shared by a bordello of sorts which explains all the weird stuff hanging on the wall in the control room. 3 songs for 300 bucks. AUTUMN TEEN SOUND records "Juliana, no" "My Star" and "100 Years to Love You." A small number of these tapes still circulate. ATS learns a valuable lesson, "no matter how much you like the guy who runs the studio, bringing him a 12-pack each night while he produces is a BAD idea..." November: ATS returns to Sympathetic Studios to back up director/actor/screenwriter /songwriter/singer Karl T. Hirsch. "Fine and Satisfied" was recorded for inclusion in Karl's independent film entitled GREEN a.k.a. WHATEVER (a limited release of the soundtrack will play a key role in SUGAR HIGH's future.) 1996 So this guy named Paul Collins who was in the NERVES and the BEAT (tragically cool power pop bands of the 70's and early 80's dare I say) got a hold of the '95 demo and gushed to the band about doing a record for his label but wants to hear some more tunes. Fine. ATS booked some studio time to knock out 5 more on a shoestring budget. February 23: On the recommendation of Peter Walker the band goes into Porcupine Studios in Chandler AZ. Nice place. 24-track, all digital, Pro Tools software, great microphones, dimly lit control room, darling little vocal booth, an actual lobby, no marital aids hanging on the walls, and a great bunch of guys who run it. The band has next to no money so only one day was secured for the entire session. The band records "Love in Stereo" "Rollercoaster" "Turbo-Teen" "Whatever You Do" and "School on Saturday."
