The Story...

Vocalist/guitarist Jeff Pending moved to Portland, Oregon from New York in search of musicians who shared his desire to write the perfect song. He teamed up with bassist Jeremy Balderson and drummer Eric French to form Starter Kit in the summer of '98. The three-piece quickly began pleasing Northwest show-goers with its punchy brand of indie rock, and developed a sound that was immediately engaging yet free of predictable chord progressions. Though wrapped in catchy melodies, Jeff's lyrics are intelligent without being pretentious, and explore the more frustrating aspects of human behavior.

After releasing their self-titled debut in 2000 on M-Theory Records, Starter Kit's line-up changed to include Amy Holmes on bass, Chris Moore on drums, and keyboardist/guitarist/vocalist Shay Scott. They recorded three songs with Larry Crane at Jackpot and two at their homes. Mastered by Jeff Saltzman, the resulting "Tenuous At Best EP" displays a more mature and sonically diverse Starter Kit.

The Press...

Starter Kit is one of the brighter stars on the indie horizon. Its tuneful pop skips with the perfect balance between energy and intellect ...without being the kind of my-aren't-we-clever crud many bands try to pass off as smart songwriting. Pending's lustrous vocals are reminiscent of Elliott Smith's Heatmiser days, with the added sinewave undulations of Jawbreaker's mellifluous emo musings.

- John Graham,Willamette Week

With tuneful and melodic songs, this Portland, OR combo ups the ante for the throngs of other bands doing the Indie Rock thing. Starter Kit's gait is matched handsomely by urgent guitars, while somewhat timid vocals wrap themselves around wry-smiling lyrics.

- Linda Ryan, Listen.com

Starter Kit plays what can only be described as infectious and impeccably tight indie rock. These mid-paced songs feature some precise melodic guitar, nice drumming, and strong bass along with guitarist Jeff Pending's nearly perfect pop vocals. Bands have been doing it for years, but few have done it so well
