"pop for thinkers" (Rolling Stone) "knack for carving subtle, emotionally complex songs into pop gems" (Performing Songwriter) "glowing melodies...this picture sparkles" (USA Today; 3.5/4 stars) "Shane is an incredible songwriter with a beautiful voice. He is truly a rare talent." (Kasey Chambers) "warm, melancholy vocals and assured melodic gifts...For fans of music both beautiful and sad, this is a "Movie" worth checking out." (Boston Herald) "captivating pipes and pure melodies...instantly memorable" (Dallas Morning News) He can sing your pain better than you can describe it to your best friend. He can silence a capacity room with just his voice and guitar. He is one of that rare breed, the genuine singer/songwriter, and his name is Shane Nicholson. After meeting with critical acclaim and strong sales in his native Australia, Shane is now poised to win over audiences in the US with his solo debut, It's A Movie. The album features special guest Kasey Chambers on vocals and was produced by Nash Chambers, who produced her two albums, along with Shane. Shane, 27 and a native of Brisbane, Australia, initially tried his musical hand at drumming. "When I was eight, I really wanted to be a drummer. I learned for about 5 years but then realized it was quite a boring instrument to play on your own," says Shane. By 13 years of age, he had graduated to the guitar. "Once I discovered chords and melody, I just wanted to be alone with my guitar all the time. I was a very anti-social teenager." Nicholson devoted his high school tenure to dabbling with a Bob Dylan song book (the only one he owned), exploring his own chord progressions, and thrashing around with a high school band called Pretty Violet Stain. After school, he moved out of home, fell in love for the first time and went on tour with Pretty Violet Stain. "It was like this huge injection of real life experience. Songs came to me differently from then on because they meant more to me. I was attached to the lyrics in a way that I never had been before." Pretty Violet Stain went on to release a revered EP (If The Money's Right, 1999) and full-length album (Parachutes and Gravity, 2000) both on a major label (Warner Music Australia), which took the band on a worldwide tour, supporting the likes of the Dandy Warhols and Alex Lloyd. Shane's decision to make his solo album was born out of natural progression, rather than dispute or ill feeling. Initially, the concept of his solo debut was treated as a side project to the band's agenda. But as the material developed, the priorities were promptly reversed. Nash Chambers, renowned for his delicate, keep-it-real approach and the groundbreaking albums he produced for his younger sister, Kasey, was called in to produce. The inimitable Kasey Chambers injects Shane's wounded vocal expression with the perfect dose of hopeful vulnerability on "Designed to Fade," the album's fifth track. According to Shane, every track on It's A Movie portrays a specific scene out of his life since becoming a full time musician almost a decade ago. It's A Movie announces the arrival of a gifted singer/songwriter whose music lives on as long as self-reflection and pain remain staples of the human condition.
