Emerging from Manchester at the same time as the Buzzcocks and Magazine, former 23 Jewels frontman Nick Simpson's first fleeting brush with pop greatness came at the crest of the 1980s New Wave with the release of "Playing Bogart" - single of the week in NME, praised to the skies by Tom Robinson, played repeatedly by John Peel and covered by legendary Brit-Pop precursors Any Trouble on their debut album "Where Are All The Nice Girls?". Never one to make life easy for himself, Simpson later turned to classical music, studying for four years with the reclusive John Tavener, and forging a career as an "unusual and uncompromising" composer, widely performed in Britain and abroad. Unable to resist the allure of pop forever though, Simpson has at last made time to record his debut album on Subtopia Records, Lashings of Pop.
