While they've been crafting their songs for over a year, this band has gained a sizeable audience and considerable praise in the short seven months they've been playing live shows. Never Stood a Chance is a progressive piece of pop, combining infectious keyboard and heavy guitar riffs (a la The Rentals) with rich, painful vocals reminiscent of Yo La Tengo's Georgia Hubley). Comprised of brothers Kevin and John Mason(both ex-Swirlitbox), guitar/ keyboards and lead guitar, respectively, bassist Jason Westbrook (ex-Schatzi), newcomer(and little brother) Brian Mason on drums, and vocalist Jennifer Christen, Masonic has rather quickly begun to establish a name for themselves and garner a following in their adopted hometown of Austin(all but Jennifer originally hail from Oklahoma City, but have called Austin home since '95). Rehearsing for nearly a year before even their first gig, Masonic came out of the gate full force, attracting sizeable crowds at many local venues. Never Stood a Chance is a collection of songs set to a stunning backdrop of guitar hooks and melodic keyboard that leaves your head and body shaking, almost making you forget that underneath the swelling guitar are softly-voiced songs about bitterness, regret, and unrequited love.
