Dishwater Psychics blend the pop-inflected songwriting traditions of the '60s and '70s with textured, indie-tinged guitars, dark lyrics and hummable melodies to create a crunchy mid-fi hybrid. Their third album, "Candlewax Horizon," melds the spontaneity of analog home-recording with the range and resources of long-distance collaboration. Reference points like early Guided by Voices, Sebadoh, and Swearing at Motorists inform the songs, which deal with Midwestern decay and drunken isolation. Recorded in Dayton, Ohio and Denver, Colorado, no musician played in the same room at the same time on "Candlewax Horizon," a method that produced some undeniably interesting results.
