Beth Boucher (boo-shay) is a Boston-based singer/songwriter and guitarist whose full-length debut album, Mess You Up, was produced by Peter Prilesnik (Sarah Harmer, Great Big Sea) and features an all-star lineup of musicians, including Luke Doucet (Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk) and Kurt Swinghammer (Ani DiFranco). Although Beth's music has been described as quirky, poppy, edgy alternative folk rock, Mess You Up offers a collection of tunes that cross genres, and add random bits of country, punk, and Latin jazz to boot. The common threads include her sweet, honest voice, witty lyrics, and varied, rich arrangements. Beth stepped into the vibrant Boston music scene in 1999 with her four-song eponymous EP, which was quickly placed in heavy rotation on college radio stations in and around Boston and as far west as California. Beth's song "Elusive Thing," which has since been newly arranged and re-recorded for the new album, was featured on The Best of Boston Singer/Songwriters Volume 2 compilation cd. Beth has been building a strong following playing clubs, such as The House of Blues and The Bitter End, as well as more intimate coffeehouses, throughout New England and the Northeast, both solo and with her 4-piece "ridiculously good-looking band." When she steps on stage, she engages the audience with humor, energy, intelligence, and passion. She is wide open, presenting herself with no pretension, weaving wit with the irrepressible optimism of her lyrics, as she rides with grace over life's little bumps. "the Beantown babe's self-deprecating wit and sing-along hooks make this better than most stuff you'll hear on mainstream radio" (NOW Magazine) "The ebullient New Englander offers clever lyrics and smart arrangements to go with her friendly, bouncy voice...pure pop, and a pleasure." (Paste Magazine) "heartfelt and personal" (Village Voice) "These are real nice songs...both subtle and deceptively complex...from what I've heard, this is as good as it gets." (The Noise) "The album's title track almost forces you to sing along to the chorus, while the upbeat melody is peppered by Boucher's quirky, funny lyrics." (York County Coast Star) "Boucher continually surprises, offering hooky, offbeat alternative folk rock that never dull...she's a person to watch in the crowded singer-songwriter field."
