Sparks, professor of communication at Lee University, Cleveland, Tennessee, has given the smooth jazz and contemporary pop treatment to timeless hymns and gospel songs. The result? An unexpectedly cool new sound, full of groove and tasteful musicianship. "I hope these contemporary treatments of some fine old songs of faith will give them fresh life for the listener and maybe even create a new favorite or two," said Sparks, who spent seven months producing the CD. The songs range from a traditional piano/bass/percussion mix to full Chicago-style arrangements with horns and B-3 keyboard. Sparks arranged, produced and recorded the album in his home studio.
