The Maybellines - Chatfield Holiday CD Best Friends Records Cat. No. FR-02 UPC: 6 34479 34052 9 "With an infectiously charming, if tentative and nervous, demeanor, The Maybellines are a band to watch on their way up." - Metalone Online Magazine Chatfield Holiday, the first full length CD from Denver indie-pop heroes The Maybellines, invites you to be a kid again. With sweet songs on topics ranging from playing board games with friends to summer camp romance and falling in love at punk rock concerts, this band knows what is most important in life and asks you to be a part of it. Give the CD one listen and I'm sure that you'll be hooked; simple yet very pretty guitar work, rolling bass lines, snappy drumming, and pastoral organ tones provide the background to shy and unpretentious girl/boy vocals, the kind of music that lets us know just how good life can be. If you're looking for comparisons, I guess the best place to start is with the bands that they have shared the stage with - Dear Nora, Electro-Group, Breezy Porticos, Dressy Bessy, Junior Varsity, The Push Kings, American Analog Set, The Love Letter Band, Aden, Wussom*Pow!, Tullycraft, and Beulah. Although the music itself might differ in style from band to band, the sentiment remains the same - simple and beautiful modern pop, created by indie kids, intended for anyone who has ever had a crush so intense it drove them to late night Smiths' listening sessions or the occasional thrift store binge. "These songs, more about the emotions behind the first year of a relationship you want to last forever, make these fifteen minutes of pop worthy of at least a quarter-hour of daily, tuneful bliss." - Splendid e-zine (review of the Maybellines first self-titled CD-EP) The Maybellines started in the fall of 1998, solidified when Julie agreed, over large plates of hummus and tabouli at a local Syrian restaurant, to sing on a project that drummer Al Adams and guitarist Mike Levasseur were working on. The project (a demo tape of power-pop anthems left over from Al and Mike's days in the Peace Corps) went so well that Julie was immediately asked to join the band, and auditions were held for a bassist. It didn't take too long before they met Dave Reeves, a spindly musician with a taste for sixties pop and having fun. The lineup clicked immediately, and they began playing around the Denver area, making friends and honing their performing skills. Within six months they had recorded their first EP, a seven-inch record with four songs that would become staples of their live shows even to this day. That first record would really get them a lot of attention. In addition to offers to appear on various compilations (Planting Seeds, Shado Records, Unread, etc.), the first release caught the eye of Ed Mazzucco, owner of Shelflife Records. He wrote the band and offered to release their first EP, as well as including them in various compilations that the label was planning to release in the future. The band jumped at the chance, and in November of 2000, the world was presented with the Maybellines first EP, a shimmering, sweet testament to friendship and indie love. It was very well received, and further strengthened the Maybellines following throughout the US and Japan. Chatfield Holiday was recorded at Uneven Studios in Denver, a recording facility ran by longtime friend Bryon Feuchtinger, who sits in as drummer for local indie pop stars Thank God For Astronauts. Bryon has been with The Maybellines from their inception, and has been the man behind the mixing board for virtually all of their releases. The CD was mastered by Jon Chaikin at NonStop Sound in San Francisco, another friend met through various indie-pop channels. You may have heard of Jon, as he has mastered tons of stuff for bands from all over, and currently operates as the in-house engineer for Shelflife Records. He's really neat. The artwork was done by Jimmy Gapinski, an old friend and artist from Virginia, and the photos (as with all Maybellines photos) were lovingly shot by Julie's better half, James.
