PopCanon's new record is even MORE diverse and rewarding than their amazing debut CD. The 14 new songs make up a very loose concept album about art, including a song to the 1930's writer/ painter/ sculptor/ feminist icon Mina Loy, and a song about what many people think PopCanon thinks about many people: I'm An Artist and You're An Asshole (titled for the album simply 'Arthole'). There are also the expected songs about books and philosophers ('Impossible', 'Make Reference' which namechecks Wittgenstein, Rorty and The Fresh Prince), more rants against religion ('See You', 'Ballyhoo'), post-postmodern whiteboy funk ('Ironica'), an actual ballad, albeit one that mentions the Misfits ('Lights Out'), and a six minute progrock instrumental ('The Composition: BrainStroll'). Plus there is their hit pop single 'Things About Which' - AND a booklet that will make you laugh. The first review of d'art called it 'an embarrassment of riches', and that's at least half-right. Having worked on it for more than 18 months in three different studios, it's their most accessible and inviting music yet even more dense and allusive, and rewarding of multiple close listenings.
