"The songs on the "ARBERESHE SONGS " CD are derived from the musical tradition of the Arberesh of Southern Italy. Some of these songs have reached us after having embarked on a historical journey spanning four hundred years. The Arberesh are Arbanites (Albanians) which, around the time of 1400, fled Arberia (known as Albania today) and the Peloponnese in order to escape the clutches of the Turkish conquerors.The songs tell stories of romance, love and those left behind. The people who came together in Southern Italy, traversing the annals of history, have left an indelible mark there with their distinct presence, retaining but also exchanging their language, their myths and their tradition. This heritage, which comprises a significant part of Mediterranean culture, comes from the past and is rejuvenated by its encounter with time, and in its renewed form enriches our present.
