Blå Kongo are a new Swedish jazz-pop quintet, a headstrong and very individual group.

Together with producer Ulf Turesson, Exergy Music proudly presents the release of their debut album.

Recorded during the summer and autumn of 1998 the road to completion was indeed long and winding.

Whereas for many bands mixing raises discussions as to which take is 'the one', Blå Kongo's problem was which version was the one!

Throughout the months in the studio the band had the opportunity to record different versions, change keys, discuss and rerecord until finally agreeing on a final version.

Very typically Blå Kongo.

The band is fronted by the enigmatic Maria Carlman (songwriter, vocalist and flautist). She is backed up by a diverse and multi-talented group of musicians.

With backgrounds ranging from the predictable scenes of jazz and blues to other more unorthodox genres such as death metal there is a mixture of characters and personalities which blend together to provide the unique Blå Kongo sound.

The music itself is dynamic and characterised by outstanding musicianship.

Most importantly it has a very personal feel.

This is clearly a band who wants to stretch out and explore their music together with the listener, leaving further avenues open for later live exploration!

The band has two main soloists: British saxophonist, Dee Byrne and pianist, Maria Kvist.

In their playing they manage to give great depth to already infectious melodies, turning and evolving them into new forms and atmospheres.

Bassplayer.... and drummer...represent an exciting rhythm-section far from that of a classic 'jazz-quartet' setup.

Not afraid to break away from the standardised conceptions of a jazz rhythm-section they create something truly individual and one can sense the strong link between them.

An active and real time communication caught on tape.

Musicians thinking on their feet.

The lyrics are a reflection of Maria's own point of view.

Firmly based upon personal experiences they deal with issues of low self-esteem, love, excessive partying and the pros and cons of narcissism.

Not your average boy meets girl story.
