Born in North Carolina and raised in the bayside community of Clear Lake, Texas, Alan started playing guitar when he was 14. Learning from songwriting greats like Paul Simon, The Beatles, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and James Taylor he learned the importance of both melody and finger-picking in the craft of songwriting. His performance experience started in a cover band called Wood, Love, and Milk during high school. He wrote his first few songs at 18 years of age but it wasn't until Alan moved to Austin, Texas that he found his songwriting voice while living in a dormitory at the University of Texas, and then on stage at open mic nights at The Cactus Café on campus. With two weeks left in college, a friend introduced him to a novice singer named Jennifer Washburn. He asked her to sit in on a recording session and sing backup vocals. They worked very well together and shared more than just a liking for music. Over the next three years Alan and Jennifer recorded their first two albums, got married, and started post-graduate education in medicine and nursing, respectively. At medical school in Lubbock, Texas, Alan's attention turned from music to medicine. However, he continued to write and record music albeit at a slower pace. The result was volume two of Squriming With Affection. Now in his pediatric residency at UVA in Charlottesville, Virginia, Alan has started to perform live shows again. When not playing out, Alan spends his time with his family and friends, practices and teaches pediatric medicine in central Virginia, and writes music.
