Continuing with the promise of her 2000 EP A Bit Of Everything, Paula Kelley continues to evolve as a popsmith that deserves attention - and plenty of it. Nothing/Everything showcases Kelley's ability to deliver songs in a more conventional form as on Two Possible Answers (The Road), as well as explore more adventurous arrangements as on You Gonna Make It with its breezy melody and delicate strings. Of course, it isn't enough to play "look what I can do" - and Kelley's songs steer clear of this. Kelley's efforts here will remind some of Poole's later releases, while her voice will invite Juliana Hatfield comparisons, but the total package is one-of-a-kind. The arrangement on "All Request Hour" is a highlight here, thanks to its simple jangly guitar and the deep cello on the verses and a wonderful guitar solo. Even better is what Kelley accomplishes on "Everything," where Kelley's wordplay merges perfectly with the almost Bacharach-like arrangement - definitely "single worthy" in a just musical climate. Kelley even offers a steady slow-dance tune that echoes past eras with the gentle sway of "Slug." The only place where the momentum slows slightly is "Ordinary Mind," but things get back on track with the closing "Showdown." Formerly a member of the Drop Nineteens, Kelley's decision to make music under her own banner has proven mightily fruitful.
