The Tangy story is like one of music's greatest legends, a tale of such woe and wonder it defies exaggeration. Their lyrics cover hardship, bereavement and chaotic misadventure, but above all they tell the tale of beautiful music triumphing over trouble and tragedy. And that's where we begin: with the beautiful music. The Jammy Bastard, jTop, and Ropin' Rodeo Nate, the three profoundly sonic brothers at the band's core for the best part of two years, have made several brilliant recordings together, but none as important as the one just completed at their basement studio in Madison, Wisconsin, 'Die for Us Tonight'. 'Die for Us Tonight' boasts a majestic and fresh form. These are magical songs, psychedelic folk songs mixed with the finest rock vintage. The band call it "aggro-pop", crafted with a cunning and acute dexterity beyond just about anybody you care to think of. Then again, every Tangy recording seems like the best... and the last. It's been a year since their previous release, 'With You Always' EP, a year they've spent writing songs, playing shows, meeting people with big ideas, writing more songs and "doing what you got to do to stay alive". Working in their own studio with their trusty 8 track and without the worry of sucking up costly studio time, their light-speed thrash-punk was rebuilt into multi-layered pop songs. They added bluesy sax lines, lush keyboards, unusual percussion fits, sampled backwards guitar and empty soda cans. Tangy were reborn and the new songs owed much to the tuneful complexity of The Clash, Radiohead, Love, Talking Heads, Wilco, and dare we say, The Stone Roses. "The journey we've had together has been beautifully turbulent," laughs Jammy. "But there's times when we glide and we're gliding forward now." JTop agrees. "Making this album has been frantic, chaos, carnage, intense: the normal way with us. And it sounds like it. That's all matters." Nobody can argue with that.
