Imported from the UK

If ever there was an apt title for an album then it's that of Bristol, England's based Cléan's second opus for Sugarshack/Listening-Post Music.

Despite their West Country address this lot are what you might describe as well traveled. There's around four different nationalities amongst the personnel, and two of the band come from countries that have a choice of native tongues. Starting a language school when they all eventually fetched up in Bristol ('We wanted to see if Portishead the town was as dark as the band, it was actually quite airy with some nice views. But we thought we'd stay in Bristol anyway' one wag from the band commented) might have been one option.

Thankfully for you, dear listener, they ticked the, 'let's start a band' box instead. As the title of their album points out, there are no language barriers when it comes to music, it simply is universal.

And so, seems, is the appeal of Cléan. They're a serious proposition, on record and live; writing intelligent, complex but strikingly simple music that's built them a large, loyal following who righteously dig Cléan's patois of the beats, melodies and crunching, heart-tearing choruses you'll hear on the likes of the killer, 'Poor Young Man' the pounding ' Everything' and swooning yet seething, 'Vendetta'.

This is a press release. So join us in comparison corner where the late, great Deus are in deep discussion with, Sparklehorse, Ride and Oasis while Eels are skulking in the corner ready to...

Hell, forget about it. Basically here's a magical anglo-European car crash that's resulted in some truly moving music that ripples invention and originality. If you want to make comparisons, write your own press release. But do make sure you get this bit in. That subtle light and shade? Those grand head battering, heart stopping bits? The anguished melodies, the... they can do it all live too. This is a liberated and liberating band who can take the sound direct to the people with real instruments. They've had enough practice.

Cléan, rather unfashionably lesser bands will point out, have something of a work ethic. Since the band's impromptu debut gig at Bristol's world famous St Paul's Carnival they've become one of the busiest bands up and down the country.
