"Intellectually complex pop songs with simple, inviting arrangements...a level of vocal harmonizing that rivals more established acts." - CMJ New Music Report

American Lad is fronted by New York City-based singer-songwriter/guitarist Garth McDermott, who drives the trio's rich vocal harmonies, heady lyrics and classic power-pop sensibilities with a level of confidence and maturity that rivals more established pop-rock acts of today.

As heard on the songs "Serious" and "Everybody Brings Me Down," McDermott (who whipped up his first song at age 3 with telling lyrics such as "You be yourself/You don't be nobody else") possesses the innate ability to mesh words and melody into beautifully poignant refrains without ever sounding verbose or self-absorbed.

Firmly beliving that songwriters should write for their own age and not always take the road most traveled, McDermott's songs touch on issues of internal conflict, self-preservation and self-discovery for those seeking to learn who they are and where life is leading them.

With influences that range from seminal rock staples such as Lennon/McCartney to modern-day pop tunesmiths like Elvis Costello, the Posies and Jason Falkner, American Lad's songs feature all the simplicity and melodic wallop to settle neatly between smart and powerful even after repeated listens.

McDermott and Sheridan have been featured as part of the CMJ Music Marathon and MusicFest in New York City and the Mixx Magazine/Sonalyst Studios Festival in Waterford, CT. Currently, American Lad is in the studio finishing up a full-length album and can be found trying out the new material locally in Manhattan to an ever-growing fan base. Check local listings for upcoming dates.

Here's What The Press Is Saying:

"One of Long Island's finer pop/rock outfits. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Garth McDermott has a razor sharp ear for melody and harmony. Bassist/vocalist Michael Sheridan supplies flawless harmonies which create that all elusive third voice."
-- Long Island Voice

"...melodic, song-based pop rock...its wall-of-sound arrangements and Garth McDermott's wonderfully tough vocals are this group's selling points."
-- Newsday

"...pop as seen thru a fun-house mirror...not quite exactly as expected and changing constantly."
-- Mixx Magazine

"...great songs both lyrically and musically...McDermott and Sheridan are blessed with the blend."
-- Musicians' Exchange
