“Our generation is robbed of the part of music that means something,†proclaims Bill Satcher, the outspoken guitarist for the band, Sterling Y. To seasoned music fans that have witnessed the decline of rock-n-roll, such a statement could easily be dismissed as another “when I was a kid†rant, used to rile up your teenage son. But considering that the statement comes from a 17-year-old who took a leave of absence from high school to play rock-n-roll, it takes on a whole new meaning. Sterling Y is comprised of guitarist Bill Satcher and 18-year-old lead singer Michael Hobby. As students in the same suburban high school in Newberry, South Carolina, these two kids met and formed a musical friendship based on a common love for vintage rock bands, such as Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, the Faces, and U2. Michael, the quintessential front man of Sterling Y, possesses an intensity and commitment to his music and his band that is rare in today's generation. Michael recalls his first band experiences in high school, in which he quickly became frustrated with the lack of commitment shown by his band mates. “The bands weren’t serious enough. My first drummer quit because of soccer practice!†Bill, the youngest and most opinionated of all of the other band members adds, “I think lots of kids are just scared to put the work into it.†Still frustrated with the lack of commitment by their peers, Michael and Bill dipped in to the pool of amazing session players in Nashville and brought on the best rock drummers and bass players around. With a kick ass band formed, killer songs under their belt, and a lot of ambition, they persuaded the high school principal to allow them to miss school to travel to gigs on short tour runs, and played 90 dates in their first year. Michael and Bill soon realized through the growing crowds at their shows, they needed to be in a larger market and moved to Nashville to work with rock producer Rogers Masson. Rogers, in his eagerness to work with the group, convinced Bill’s principal that he would act as his guardian, monitoring his homework for the remainder of the school year. Thus began an intense recording and touring schedule that has consumed Sterling Y since late 2005. The resulting work, Ten Comes Twice, is a nod to the past in its analog approach to recording and its melodic approach to songwriting, and is at the same time completely and undeniably relevant to today’s youth. Michael explains, “I’m the kid who had everything growing up, but I’ve dealt with death and divorce just like everyone else. I want my songs to become bigger than my own experience. To become my audience’s experience.†Sterling Y have modeled themselves after their vintage rock idols, perfecting their playing, songwriting, and stage show the old fashioned way: through hard work, sacrifice, and commitment to their music. Indeed, Sterling Y has brought back the “part of music that means something.†Check out the artist's website: http://www.sterlingy.com Track List: 1. Diamond RIng 2. May I Remind You 3. Unglued 4.
