Mac McCaughan is the co-founder of Merge and one of the main characters of the indie scene, thanks to his band Superchunk. Since he started his project with Portastatic he hasn't stop to get praises. And, to prove why he is still one of those incomparable pop genius, he releases now his new EP: "Looking for a power supply". The Ep starts with "Bright Ideas", a folk mosaic that shows all Mac's songwriting skills. But we can't forget his more energy side, the one that shows in "Through With People" (with some riffs that are really characteristic of the 90's indie rock scene). In this short but intense EP Mac touches also the more bucolical melodies, as the ones that exudes "A faithless Auld Lang Syne". To sum up, three different points of view for the same songwriting talent, that materializes on a EP that finishes with "Power Supply", a soft piece where the guitars sound too close and warm, as an example of what Mac's voice is. This EP has been recorded in his own house and on a studio in NC. And, if previously he decided to cover songs for Springsteen "Growin' Up" or Ronnie Lane's "One For The Road", now is about time to tribute Dylan with "It's all over now, baby blue". This is a song that Bob wrote in 1965 for one of his more rock n' roll albums: "Bringing it all back home". The result is an updated review of this classical track that hasn't lost its essence, but neither pretend to be an original tracing. Portastatic is all that Mac wanted to dream about with Superchunk but never dared to offer, an alternative path to let flow all his lo-fi creative wills. These are a bunch of songs full of melody, melody and more melody, created with a devastating honesty and a shattering fragility.
