Remember the first time you heard a catchy song on the radio? How your body got all warm and fuzzy on the inside when the beats hit your feet to get the toes tapping and the words hit your ear drums almost as if they were meant to jump off your tongue? The times you felt sad and the world was against you, but there was one record you had to hear that epitomized your thoughts and soothed your soul? Imagine a record that is this and everything in between and you've discovered Cherry Soda's debut record "Joyride". The brainchild of one Laura Rutherford, a Los Angeles transplant via St.Louis, Cherry Soda is essentially a one-woman effort with a rotating group of backing players. She commands your attention with guitar pop creations crowned by silky vocals, at turns lilting and gutsy-rich. With the help of co-producer Alex Reed, Cherry Soda offers up a rare, beautiful first album that consoles, rocks, and gives you a sugar fix. "Joyride" was written over the course of one long year in Los Angeles, from the summer of '97 to the summer of '98. With a natural song-writing talent that weaves original melodies and simply smart lyrics, Laura explores everyday dramas without being too personal. Songs like "Living El Nino" celebrate the sunny side of life during its dark storms, while the humorous, sexy cabaret stylings of "Spider" and the rollicking rock 'n roll "California Love" are witty observations of the L.A.'s dating scene. "On Easter to the Christian God" wraps feelings of loss and doubts about God in a mesmerizing tapestry of effects-laden guitars. The crystalline pop gem Valentine takes you on a wintry skating excursion filled with the nervous anticipation of the first time holding hands. Raised on a steady diet of music ranging from such personal heroes as Joni Mitchell and The Beatles to contemporaries like Liz Phair, Veruca Salt, Fiona Apple, The Verve and Sparklehorse, Laura gives us small hints about her musical loves without copping or copying. Cherry Soda "Joyride" presents its unique blend of sugary pop, melancholy absinthe and straight whisky attitude in one cool bottle that satisfies from start to finish.
