Meet Scientific, a shy outfit with a bold new CD titled "From the Nest of Idea." The Chicago-based band's newest offering is ten songs written by Christian Wargo and performed with analog pop precision by his band of like minded purists. But don't worry: They're not taking themselves too seriously. While the songs themselves shoot a quizzical sideways stare at your stories of conflict and doubt, overall this is a witty and lighthearted offering leaving some room for sing alongs and dancing. Rather than spending years and dollars at universities to learn the craft of stainless steel tools or test tubes and microscopes, Scientific pines over the formulas to healthy songs working with models presented by other scholars like Stephen Merit (The Magnetic Fields, the 6ths, etc.), Neu!, Sterelab, Yo La Tengo and the VSS. Yep. You guessed it. There are some keyboards involved. But not without the backbone of crisp guitars and strikingly memorable vocal melodies. It's a band in the traditional sense of the word. A band writing pop songs for you to enjoy. After a self-released full length record and a few tracks appearing on singles and various compilations, Scientific have gained a nice loyal following of fans. The band's return with "From the Nest of Idea" is a perfect taste of the growth and maturity that's come along since the band's first record made its way into music lovers hands. The new album was recorded humbly in the bands hometown of Chicago and if you tell Wargo that you've heard it, he'll ask quietly: "Did you like it?" Although the wild perfectionism Scientific applies to their music drives Wargo to say the record's "not as good as I want it to be," give it a few listens and I think you'd answer his meek inquiry with an enthusiastic: Yes!
