Alex Schaetzing Bio Alex Schaetzing is a highly creative and versatile artist who draws his inspiration from Classic Rock, movies, novels and poetry. Being interested in virtually any type of music, he merges old-fashioned melodies, Rock/Blues grooves and Folk-based lyrics to a style uniquely his own. Over the years, Alex has acquired an astonishing variety of skills within the field of music - songwriting, producing, arranging, sequencing, editing, mixing and mastering. Aside from being a professional drummer and a capable vocalist, he plays guitar, percussion, keyboards, cello, and bass. Born in 1974 in Munich, Germany, he took cello lessons as a child and later turned to singing and playing guitar after seeing the Beatles film "A Hard Day's Night". Aged thirteen, he started writing his own songs and built his first cassette-based recording studio in the basement of his parent's house. Around the same time he started playing drums and later took formal lessons with Stephan Wildfeuer at a local music school. He formed numerous bands, covering songs by artist like The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Eagles. When he took the percussion seat in the Rudolf Steiner School orchestra, he was met with enthusiastic crowd response and became a major attraction at concerts and tours. Performing Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" made a lasting impression on Alex, had always been fascinated with American culture. He put together a Jazz ensemble that performed at local events, including his own High School graduation party. In 1994, he flew to Boston to attend the 5-week summer program at Berklee College of Music. After studying music pedagogy and musicology at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich for one semester, he returned to Berklee as a full-time student. Alex quickly adapted to his new life in America and, through hard work, established himself as a sough-after drummer for live shows and recording sessions. In addition, he started performing and recording his own material with numerous talented artists such as Akiko Grace, Aquilles Baez, Wolfgang Roggenkamp, Rachel Panay, and Sylvia Gordon. In 1996, he formed the band Aristos with clarinetist Enrico Cerretti and performed at numerous Boston clubs, recording sessions and TV shows. He graduated Berklee with a degree in Music Business/Management and moved back to Germany, where he worked as a drummer, producer and composer. During this time, he read several books on songwriting and decided to continue his formal education. He spent the summer of '99 in England, attending two courses at Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA). The following year, he moved back to Boston to major in songwriting at Berklee. His return proved fruitful. Learning from top songwriting teachers like Pat Pattison encouraged Alex to develop his highly original songwriting style and break away from the ordinary. During visits to Nashville, TN, Alex had the chance to work with some of the finest musicians in the United States. He also re-connected with the Boston music scene and started working with numerous local artists. As a member of the Jazz/Blues band "Concrete Canyon" and the more Rock-oriented group "Firetrap", he played numerous local gigs. He acquired digital recording equipment and started recording, mixing, and mastering projects for other artists. In 2002, Alex graduated magna cum laude from Berklee, started his own record label, Vagrant Gleam Music, and released the album "Seaside", a compilation of songs from 1995-2002. In 2003, he released his album "Danger in the Sky", on which he performed most of the instruments himself. Alex continues to grow as a musician every day.
