What good is the even best melody if there aren't lyrics to give it life? And what good are the most moving words if the song's beat doesn't drive them? Fortunately for you, three lads known as Michael, Brett and Josh found a way to blend their words and music into perfect harmony and create a cacophony of exquisite sound known throughout their ever growing fan-base as Combination Standpipe. Bridging the divide between The Big Apple and City of Brotherly Love, Combination Standpipe is simply the rockingest band from points in between and beyond. Inspired by the legendary bands of yesteryear, The Pipe are making music that will move you and the masses. Their sound is unique, yet familiar, written with the intention of winning over casual music fans with catchy hooks and clever lyrics, while flexing creative musical muscle to the attention and applause of serious music lovers. To put it simply: Combination Standpipe is a band for everyone, everywhere. "We're influenced by good old fashioned songwriters," says Brett Hauze, The Pipe's bassist and vocalist. Clearly versed and sophisticated in the craft of songwriting, the ideas for songs come from their own personal experiences. This is undoubtedly exemplified on their self-financed and self-produced debut album "Let the Small Ride". The album was recorded the summer and fall of 2004. In "Secret Song," a mid-tempo ballad about "doomed relationships," the band explores those relationships that project the deceiving front that everything is roses when actually theirs is a liaison as weedy as they come. "And Everything Else,", a fan favorite, is the band's way of imploring a couple of people to wise up and stop hurting everyone around them. The acoustic driven "Free Private Show" is one for the lovers. What is the song specifically about? "Umm...whatever the kids are calling it these days", snickers Brett. No mystery there. A favorite, he adds, "among the ladies" is "Mighty Big Shoes." Perhaps the album's best track, "Mighty Big Shoes" weaves a delicate soundscape throughout a heartbreaking lyric. Each of these tracks and the four others on "Let the Small Ride" are jam-packed with great lyrics, pulsating rhythms, and ear catching melodies; a potent trinity that makes Combination Standpipe a real gem among the plenitude of rock 'n' roll mediocrity. "I think we have the originality in songwriting and the drive to be a great band that gives people a satisfying musical experience they can't get anywhere else," says drummer Josh Fullam. Guitarist and vocalist Michael Collins agrees, but isn't one for expanding on the wisdom of his drummer. The front-man prefers to let the album speak for itself. "It's the best album we have ever made..." he notes, "...until the next one."
