Glen Soulis biographical note

Inspired by Jascha Heifetz, Glen took up the violin when he was nine years old. When he got to high school, there was no string program, so he opted for the lightest instrument – flute, which eventually supplanted the violin.
His first professional engagement was at St. Andrew’s Church, in Kitchener, where he continues to perform regularly. When Raffi Armenian came to conduct the KW Symphony, Glen joined as a flute player. Next, came the opportunity to tour with the Stratford Theatre, doubling on chromatic- harmonica and flute. Playing the same short musical ‘cues’ night after night proved too rigid for Glen, and, taking up the violin again, he started a career accompanying guitarist/singers.
He continued to develop as a musician, adding recorders, penny-whistles, saxophones and an assortment of unusual instruments to his skill set. He’s done studio work as composer and performer for the CBC, Vision TV and several independent artists, including the Good Brothers. Since 1979 he’s been one half of the popular and versatile Waterloo region duo, The Beirdo Brothers. A recent concert with the young guitar virtuoso, Kevin Ramessar, was a musical highlight.
Inspired by his friend, pan-piper Fernan Enriques, Glen decided to produce a series of recordings featuring the penny-whistle, in order to demonstrate the versatility of the instruments, and, ultimately to develop an instructional method. To ensure the quality of the endeavor, the best area musicians were called in to provide accompaniment. The results speak for themselves.
On a personal note, Glen lives with his wife, Helen Basson, an accomplished singer and aspiring guitarist in Waterloo, Ontario. Two adult children, twins Harold (recently married to Julie) and Nicky live nearby.
