Morning Song Evening Song - Recent Reviews

"White and Gates have been playing together since 1975 and their musical telepathy comes through loud and clear on this meditative musical masterpiece. Inspired by Indian classical master Ali Akbar Khan, their mix of sitar and acoustic guitar sounds amazing and the improvisational nature of the recording is a tribute to the duo's musical mastery."
Robert Silverstein
20th Century Guitar magazine

"The duo and trio reach out with natural acoustic means and are able to touch their audience through a universal language. In White's hands the sitar is quite expressive, and gives us a lasting impression. Timeless in its interpretation, the performance wins our spirit over with its universal appeal."
Cadence Magazine, 2005

"Not to be missed, indeed! Played Odysseus & Circe last night. What a premiere! I will be playing more of this one!"
Tony Dillon-Davis, CKUA in Calgary, Alberta

""Morning Song, Evening Song" from Tim White and Jack Gates. Wow.... sitar and bamboo flutes... this is quite exquisite!!! Is getting, and will continue to get, 3-4 spins a week here on 100,000 watt KUMD in Duluth, MN"
John Ziegler (Program Dir.), KUMD in Duluth, MN

"Thanks for sending us "Morning Song, Evening Song" by Tim White and Jack Gates - it's most unusual, and we like it a lot. We put it in our play list and began airing it in February."
Gene Purcell, Regional Manager
Wisconsin Public Radio, Radio Station WLSU

"It is the fruit of years of hard work...the East/West blend is more than a superficial effort, and works extremely well here. We want more, of course, but they have provided more than enough, beautifully done."
George Ruckert, former Director, Ali Akbar College of Music, Senior Lecturer in Music, MIT

"I am deeply impressed and inspired by your CD. By the third song I was almost in tears. I am so amazed at the complexity and skill level."
Jessica Rountree (Review from Amazon.com)

"Morning Song, Evening Song is fantastic! White and Gates celebrate a remarkable brand of intuitive human exchange that unites stunning musical prowess with heavy doses of heart and soul. Highly recommended."
John Bennett (Review from Amazon.com)

"Morning Song, Evening Song by Tim White and Jack Gates is an amazing release and has spent many hours in my CD player. I'm very pleased and honored to help bring this release to you. Tim White and Jack Gates have been playing music together since they were teenagers. Their collaboration on this release features the sounds of the sitar, bamboo flutes, guitar and mridangam. Compelling, yet peaceful, this is music your listeners will love and appreciate."

Tim White

Tim White has been performing music since he was 13. He studied jazz guitar and later began a 20-year love affair with the sitar and North Indian classical music.

In 1975, he and Jack Gates met North Indian classical master musician Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and began studying with him - an experience, which deeply influenced their future and their music.

In 1976, they formed the group "Phoenix" and created a unique synthesis of North Indian classical and Western music styles, exposing their rapt audiences to "world music" long before the term was in vogue. Their collaboration on Morning Song, Evening Song reflects their unique style of "musical dialogue".

As an award-winning composer and musician Tim White has collaborated with other cutting-edge composers such as Fred Frith, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, Jack Gates and Stuart Dempster. White has composed critically acclaimed music for film, theater and dance.
