MERCURY, the debut CD from Paul Speedy, is a beautiful guitar-led journey through many cultures meant to soothe the meditative soul, capturing the feeling between dreams and waking life. Stylistically, the CD blends acoustic guitar, relaxing natural ambience and world fusion, creating a textural soundscape that truly expands beyond meditation. Mercury sets the perfect mood for relaxing massage, aromatherapy, yoga, bath, or any tranquil setting--putting you deeply in touch with serenity. Mercury takes the listener above the world for one second in time; imagine being able to see all countries at the same instant, dawn to dusk all at once, across the canvas of the world. The album opens with the pre-dawn mood of "Temple's Breath", a haunting glimpse of temples shrouded in the morning fog of eastern Asia. “Sunrise†captures the feeling of watching the sun shake the dark of night as it rises up above the rain forests. “Baranów†leaves you feeling the crisp morning air of the Carpathian Mountains, while the 47-second break out “Tuscan Sun†is the heat of the noon sun embodied on guitar. Miles away from the busy setting of civilization finds “Desert Dreamâ€, a soaring balance of surreal echoes and rhythmic percussion. The final two tracks are solo guitar pieces, both recorded in one take. Paul’s finger-picked guitar finds an upbeat Celtic influence in “Green Rainâ€, setting the stage for the final piece--the bluesy and reflective "From Austin to Seattle", a tribute to 2 of Paul’s favorite guitar players. In a genre filled with synthesizers and monaural chants, rarely has a guitarist managed to blend vigor and tranquility into ambient music so well. This album is both compositionally rich and musically adventurous, and the range and tone of the guitar is incredible.
