The music of Detroit, Michigan's Compact Deity is, at one moment, industrial-esque guitar bombast. At another moment, it is a somewhat classic rock psychedelia. And then, at another moment, it is a dreamy swirling new wave/shoegazer experience.

As schizophrenic as the 3 tracks of their 'Modern Noise' EP may seem in comparison, each remains firmly rooted in a style that is, essentially, a modern rock hybrid. The songs are, perhaps, more different from one another than one is used to with recent rock music clones. But the sounds are not so drastically different that one would ever question their presence on the same album. Rather, they gain the interest of the listener. Elements of industrial, electronic, alternative 80's, and classic rock can be discerned, albeit blended very tastefully. It's not unfamiliar, but different.

One wonders what sort of sonic offerings this band will provide on subsequent albums. Perhaps the days when bands were permitted to experiment are not completely lost. Or, at least, an experimenting and evolving band such as this one simply doesn't care about pandering to big business. Who gets good music from big business these days, anyway, really?

The vocals offered by singer/guitarist Tarik Al-Kadhim sound akin to Leonard Cohen or Iggy Pop on steroids after gargling with diesel fuel. Somehow, it suits the music well...Jim Morrison as the Incredible Hulk. You get the idea.

If you appreciate great guitar playing, this band does not disappoint. Fans of The Cult, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure, Ministry, Soundgarden, Lush and My Bloody Valentine should be very pleased with Compact Deity. Throw in The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin for good measure and shake.
