All Genres > Metal > Dark Ambient/Noise > KNURL: Cytostatic

Knurl was formed in 1994 from an idea to take music as we know it and to strip it entirely of what we know music to be. i.e. rythmical, lyrical and a verse/chorus format. The inspiration came from working in welding shops and wanting to harness the sounds of cutting and grinding metal and putting it into a sound project.

This release is being sold as a cdr.

Here is a review from Paul Bijlsma of Phosphor Magazine out of Germany:

knurl: cytostatic CDR
Alan Bloor has sent us another CDR by Knurl. This Toronto-based musician
is also involved in Pholde.
Knurl's latest (and fourteenth?) album Cytostatic is full of white noise.
Screaming noise sounds have been layered to result in a furious musical
excursion. No mercy, apart from an occasional moment of calmer feedback.
The music is fast, aggressive and seems to be full of pain. Titles such as
Hemiplegia (paralysis of the same side of the body), Morphalaxis and
Fulguration (sudden development in humans), derived from medical
terminology, are a good indication what to expect.
All sounds were produced with instruments constructed from found metal
objects, a way of working Alan Bloor is known for.
Although extreme, this can be considered a good album.

rik maclean's *ping things* CD Reviews

"Cytostatic" by Knurl

With the release of the latest disc "Cytostatic", Alan Bloor
of Knurl continues his efforts to forge and shape the sounds
of manipulated metal into new sonic environments ripe for
exploration. Using unique sculptured instruments of his
own design, Bloor coaxes out sounds and rhythms which
he processes and effects to create odes to the abrasive
wonders of machinery and automation. Upon first listen one
might mistakenly think the works created were random and
haphazard sound with little or no defining shape. But more
careful consideration reveals a motion and structure to pieces
that suggest truths and mysteries contained within the metal.
Truths that are desperate to be released and heard.
Truths that Bloor wants to share with us...

While some of the work contained herein is quite challenging
to the casual listener, those that take the time to explore
further will be rewarded for their efforts. "Cytostatic" is a
release of great depth and substance and is well worth
the effort to dig deeper.
