"Imagine an opera for the dead. That’s the best way to describe this album, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. If I was categorizing all of my CDs, I would put Mysterion with my favorites of yesteryear: all of my Metallica albums prior to 1991 and Megadeth’s So Far, So Good… So What! Matt Knowles is the lead singer and lyricist of Royal Anguish. His “Atmosphere” is somewhat reminiscent of Dave Mustaine’s, “In My Darkest Hour.” The Royal Anguish songs definitely have that hard-edge quality typical of 80s metal: deep, heavy vocals, dark lyrics, and pounding guitars that make you want to put up those devil horns and bang your head. Now mix in reverent keyboards, violin, and some truly beautiful supporting vocals by female sopranos with apparent classical training. This is the sound of Royal Anguish. My only question: how did this music come out of Ocala, Florida?" - Rag Magazine

"this is a whole new Royal Anguish and the quality level is through the roof. Mysterion might be on the small label, Sounds of the Dead Records, but this is every bit as good as almost anything you’ve heard in the last year. The band labels themselves as the innovators of hybrid metal. A mixture of many styles is what comprises this disc and every piece is meticulously recorded to near perfection. Royal Anguish took forever to record this album and it seems that every second was worth it. The band runs the gamut from death vocals to soaring clean vocals, to breathtaking female vocals, to crushing, head-banging riffs, to shredding solos, to acoustic guitar, to violins. I could literally go on and on. Describing the intricacies of this album in such a small space is nearly impossible. A truly exquisite work of art!" HM Magazine

"Truly one of the best metal CDs to come out, if not just for this year, but for all time: Royal Anugish, "Mysterion", the absolutely clear marriage of music and extremity, makes every effort - and succeeds - to dispel the reoccuring myth that heavy metal can never be musical. Truly extreme, heavy, brutal, and yet so utterly beautiful, ethereal, melodious, harmonic and varied, from beginning to end, "Mysterion" satisfies the tastes from the artist to the mosher. The use of the female vocals - becoming more common in epic, folk and black metal, vary from the sweet vocals of Courtney Chadwick, to the strong, otherworldly soprano heavenlies of Katy Decker. Mysterion" is the clearest indication that the musical artists that comprise Royal Anguish wanted to own for themselves a musical metal legacy currently possessed by Disincarnate, Therion, Believer, Arch Enemy, Tristania, Kalmah and Extol. We may have witnessed the best CD of 2004, and one of the best ever done." www.valsignalande.com
